There are times we feel powerless in our lives, especially when we face difficult times and challenges. We feel like we can do nothing. And it’s in these moments we have to recognize God’s power.
This is the same power by which God created the heavens and Earth. It’s the same power that parted the sea for Moses and allowed Jesus to heal the sick. These miracles would not have been possible without the power of prayer.
We can harness that same power in our lives - every day. God gives us this power through His Holy Spirit. At Pathfinders Pastoral Care Ministries, our approach to counseling is designed to equip individuals with personalized strategies to effectively manage life’s challenges and discover the strength needed to carry out the purpose God created for them.
One of the ways we do this is through Spiritual thinking and prayer. Below, we highlight the power of prayer and the positive impact it can have on mental wellness.
The Positive Impact of Prayer on Mental Health
“Researchers from Baylor University found that people who pray to a loving and protective God are less likely to experience anxiety-related disorders — worry, fear, self-consciousness, social anxiety and obsessive compulsive behavior — compared to people who pray but don’t really expect to receive any comfort or protection from God (psychcentral.com).”
This distinction is very important. It’s not just the action of prayer that matters, it’s the relationship you’re building with God. Prayer is an act of worship that glorifies God and reinforces our need for Him.
Through prayer, we enter into an intimate relationship with Him. When this is the case, prayer offers emotional comfort, resulting in fewer symptoms of anxiety disorders.
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Why Prayer Works
The power of prayer isn’t in the person praying. It’s not saying specific words. Rather, it resides in the God being prayed to. Learning how prayer works is part of the process of growing our relationship with the Lord. As we develop an active and continuous connection with God, we discover the power of prayer.
Be Patient with Prayer
Prayer is not magic. While God will always answer our prayers, He may not answer them in a way we expect or prefer. But we must trust the Lord God’s will, for He knows what is best for us. We should spend time trusting and understanding God’s plan for us. When we do, we can be sure God listens to us.
We invite you to contact Pathfinders Pastoral Care Ministries if you or someone you love is ready to embrace Spiritual thinking and the power of prayer to overcome negative thoughts and habits.
